Equine Respiratory Health

by Tomlyn on Feb 25 2018
With cold temperatures blanketing much of the United States, finding ways to maintain respiratory health is on everyone’s mind. You shouldn’t forget about your horse’s either, as challenges to respiratory health can decrease wellness and potentially limit performance. Here are a few tips that can help keep your horse healthy: Practice good husbandry practices – Minimizing nose-to-nose contact both in the barn and while trailering, keeping water buckets, tack and grooming equipment clean, and separating any horses that have traveled off the farm from the rest of the herd (at least a few days) are all husbandry practices that can help keep horses healthy and any challenges to respiratory health to a minimum. Reduce the presence of dust and allergens – Having a well-ventilated barn, keeping aisle ways swept, soaking hay, keeping hay off the ground, avoiding round bail hay, and using low-dust bedding material such as wood chips, peat moss, or recycled cardboard can all help minimize the presence of dust and allergens in your barn and thus reduce potential challenges to your horse’s respiratory health. Minimize stressful events and situations – Events such as veterinary or farrier visits, weaning, shipping, changing of social groups, and high-intensity exercise or performance can all be stressful for horses. Stress can weaken the immune system and increase you horse’s risk of respiratory health challenges. Your veterinarian can offer suggestions on how to help your horse cope with stress and minimize these risks. Add a respiratory health supplement – Equistro Secreta Pro Max is Tomlyn’s newest equine product and it contains ingredients that support normal respiratory function and health. Thyme and black horehound support maintenance of a clear, unrestrictive airway. Coltsfoot, grindelia, mullein flowers, and climbing ivy help maintain secretion production that is of optimal viscosity. Thyme, liquorice, burdock, grindelia, and mullein flowers support a horse’s respiratory hygiene status, and Vitamin E support normal defense mechanisms. This product is a highly palatable pellet that is administered daily as needed to support respiratory health. Following these tips and obtaining regular wellness veterinary care will help keep your horse healthy and active this season!

VET OFFERS TIPS FOR WINTER HORSE CARE

by Tomlyn on Nov 14 2017
Tomlyn Equine Supplements Can Help Keep Horses Healthy in Winter MonthsFORT WORTH, TX, November 14, 2017 – Winter can be hard on horses, from the cold temperatures to the close quarters of the barn. “Regardless of your horse’s job – be it competition or pleasure — keeping him active with proper nutrition during winter months is essential to maintaining their health during the off-season,” says Jennifer Kasten, DVM, technical services veterinarian for Tomlyn® Veterinary Science (www.tomlyn.com).Dr. Kasten highlights four ways to help benefit your horse’s health and well-being during the cold weather: Keep Moving: Fall and winter months are an important time for your competition horse to recover and condition in preparation for the next season, so keeping him moving is key. Have your horse walk forward with impulsion for 20-30 minutes per day to maintain joint mobility and strengthen his muscles. This can be performed in a number of ways – such as arena riding, lungeing or using a hot-walker or an underwater treadmill if you have access to one. Stretch Out: Stretching exercises can help increase flexibility and rage of motion, improve performance and help prevent injuries. Speak with your veterinarian on which stretching exercises are most appropriate and beneficial for your horse. Supplement for Health: To provide further support for your horse’s joints, consider adding a supplement such as Tomlyn Equistro® Artphyton to his regimen. “Equistro Artphyton contains key ingredients to contribute to your horse’s all around joint health,” says Dr. Kasten. “Glucosamine and devil’s claw in the product help support joint mobility.” Stabling your horse for the winter can also impact his respiratory and gastrointestinal health. Barns can be dusty, poorly ventilated and put horses in close quarters with each other, all of which can challenge a horse’s immune and respiratory systems. “Adding a supplement such as Tomlyn’s EPIC Daily Immune Support for Horses can provide extra support throughout the season thanks to the presence of N-Acetylcysteine, probiotics, and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids,” suggests Dr. Kasten. “The EPIC technology specifically helps enhance the immune response in the face of common respiratory and gastrointestinal challenges.” Catch Colic Early: Your horse has a very sensitive digestive system, which can become stressed during the seasonal transition. With a lack of green grass to graze, most owners will switch horses to hay which is much dryer. A horse also may not drink as much water as he does during hot weather, and he won’t be moving around as much when brought to stable. These can all lead to impaction colic which can be very painful for your horse, and if not addressed promptly, may be life-threatening for your horse. Dr. Kasten recommends making sure your horse stays hydrated by keeping water buckets clean and free of ice during the fall and winter months, and keeping him moving with regular exercise to help prevent signs of colic. Tomlyn’s line of equine products are available in local feed stores nationwide. Ear Infections in Dogs (Ear Cleaning Tips)

by Tomlyn on Mar 12 2017
Canine ear infections represent one of the most frustrating issues pet owners face in supporting the health of their companions. An understanding of the anatomy of the ear canal is important in providing efficient care. Canine ear infections represent one of the most frustrating issues pet owners face in supporting the health of their companions. An understanding of the anatomy of the ear canal is important in providing efficient care. The external ear canal ends at the tympanic membrane, aka ear drum. Visualize this canal as the surface of the skin rolled inside out. The surface of the canal acts as the first layer of immune defense against infection. When the skin is irritated or inflamed, redness, pain, and swelling consistent with ear infection occurs. The environment of the ear canal represents a perfect incubator for infection. It is a dark, warm, moist environment that get very poor air circulation, especially in long-eared breeds. Compounding the problem is the existence of a normal amount of potentially disease-causing organisms in the ear at all times. With excessive moisture (think constant swimming), excessive debris, or underlying allergic or metabolic issues, these ever-present organisms may overgrow and cause a classic infection. Routine maintenance of the ear canal should address the anatomy and environment of the ear canal to minimize the incidence of infections. Routine cleaning should occur every 1-2 weeks depending on the breed, lifestyle, and environment your pet frequents. A drying agent should be incorporated in ear cleaning products to minimize the amount of moisture in the canal.  Ingredients such as dioctyl sodium succinate (DSS) will act to break up excessive debris and wax and facilitate their removal when the dog shakes his head. This will also support adequate air flow in the canal. Avoid using cotton-tipped applicators as they tend to push debris deeper into the canal, putting pressure on the ear drum. Acidifying agents create a less hospitable environment in the ear canal for organisms, especially yeast, to grow. Yeast favor less acidic conditions. Tomlyn's Veterinarian Formulated Ear Cleaner meets the requirements for supporting a healthy ear canal by including a drying agent, three acids to create an inhospitable environment for organisms, and DSS to remove debris while leaving the ear clean-smelling.  Excessive redness, pain, or head tilting evidenced in your canine companion justifies a visit to your veterinarian who can prescribe appropriate therapy to treat ear infections.

Understanding Passive Verse Active Immunity

by Tomlyn on Dec 14 2016
Adequate immunity in calves is critical to ensure continued growth and development. Understanding the two types of immunity and ways to support both promotes thriftiness in herds large or small. Active immunity is that derived primarily from vaccination. It is the introduction of an antigen (usually a bacteria) through an injection to stimulate the calf’s immune system to produce antibodies. Vaccination with specific disease-causing organisms promotes the production of adequate levels of protection within the calf’s immune system, supporting health when the animal is challenged by these organisms in nature. Think of the antibody as a “key” fitting into the “lock” of the disease-causing agent. Once the key is in the lock, the bug is inactivated. Active immunity can also be derived from natural exposure to organisms as the calf grows and develops. To bolster active immunity, make sure the vaccines being used are protective against diseases common to your area. Make sure vaccines are stored properly and administered appropriately. The response to a vaccine depends on proper administration into animals that are healthy and free of excessive stress. Humane handling and care of your animals during the vaccination process will support a strong response to the vaccine. Passive immunity is that derived from the delivery of pre-formed antibodies into the calf and provide short-term protection. Ingestion of colostrum (“first milk”) from the dam by the calf within the first 12 hours of life represent classic passive immunity. The colostral immunoglobulins (antibodies) can only be absorbed by the calf during these first 12 hours of life. After that, the ability of the calf to absorb these large molecules is no longer possible and the calf must then rely on its own immunity (and future active immunity). Failure of passive transfer (or failure to receive adequate colostrum) significantly compromises the survivability of the calf. The calf is dependent on this immune protection for the first two weeks of life. To ensure adequate passive immunity is received, make sure the dam has been appropriately vaccinated prior to delivery of the calf. It is these vaccinations (active immunity) that produce antibodies that will ultimately be transferred through the colostrum to the calf. Make sure her udder and teat confirmation are satisfactory to allow the calf to nurse adequately. The cow’s body condition should be satisfactory to produce good quality colostrum and moving forward, milk. Make sure the calf has nursed aggressively within the first 12 hours of life. If there are any doubts, consider administration of a commercial colostrum product, or frozen colostrum from a dairy, through tube feeding during this period.  Another form of passive transfer now available to support a calf’s immunity is through egg proteins. Chickens are now being custom vaccinated to specific disease-causing organisms important to the health of calves. The antibodies produced are concentrated in the yolks of the egg and can be processed and packaged in powder form. These bird antibodies do not react with the cow antibodies and provide additional immune support for the calf. Tomlyn’s EPIC line of products utilize this technology in the three products for the calf: one for the newborn, one for scouring calves, and one for those calves needing additional electrolyte support. While not a replacement for adequate passive transfer, the EPIC products provide additional support and “fill in the gaps” where additional immune boosting is needed.

Notes from the Vet - Dr. Jim Lowe: Some Things Pet Owners Should Know…At Least This Veterinarian Thinks So

by Tomlyn on Dec 14 2016
Your veterinarian prescribes a strength of a specific antibiotic for a determined amount of time to best support overcoming the diagnosed infection. Under-dosing or not giving the entire course prescribed promotes resistant microorganisms. It has been suggested that aspirin is the most common medication that owners self-treat their pets with, yet do not tell their veterinarian. Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and administering another medication in the class concurrently can cause harm to your pet. Full disclosure ensures that appropriate and safe therapy can be instituted. Flea hypersensitivity is the most common cause of scratching in animals. Unless your pet is on a solid flea prevention protocol, it is very likely that flea irritation/allergy needs to be ruled out before searching for additional causes of skin problems. The presence of even one flea can be enough to create severe skin issues in sensitive animals. No matter how secure a home is, it is likely that mosquitoes will find their way indoors. Their presence puts your pet at risk for heartworm disease. Heartworm prevention is indicated even in those animals who "never go outside". Just as in the human population, the majority of the pet population is overweight. When assessing your dog’s body condition against the population, your "skinny" dog may actually be in shape. Clinically poor body condition mandates thorough physical examination and diagnostic tests. Except for tapeworm segments that resemble pieces of rice and can be seen in the stools, most intestinal worms shed microscopic eggs that require a microscope and fecal flotation technique to discover. Not seeing worms in your pet’s stool does not mean parasites could not still be present. Alcohol can be very irritating to a red, inflamed ear, causing great discomfort to your pet. Many ear infections may also involve the ear drum (or tympanic membrane), and if the drum is affected, it can allow ototoxic substances (like alcohol) into the middle and inner ear, causing potentially permanent damage. A red, painful, smelly ear demands a visit to your veterinarian. Routine cleansing with a product that cleans, dries, and acidifies the canal promotes healthy ears. The "cup" you use to feed your dog may be a 20 ounce plastic cup purchased at the ballpark last time you attended, or one-half of a coffee can. Use a standard measuring cup to ensure you are feeding the recommended daily amounts of food for your pet’s weight and age. Overfeeding promotes obesity. Animals exhibit pain in any number of ways besides vocalizing. Decreased appetite, decreased activity, hiding, or aggression might all indicate discomfort. Be on the lookout for these behaviors that indicate your animal may be hurting quietly. The solution for some behavioral issues may be easier than we might think.  If your dog tends to bite your neighbor, and only your neighbor whenever they visit, isolate your dog when said neighbor comes over.  If your animal gets aggressive when nervous, consider boarding when having large numbers of people over for holiday parties or events.  Such times can make certain animals very nervous and anxious.  If your pet gets car sick when traveling, consider if their presence on the trip is absolutely necessary.  They may enjoy a couple of days at the doggie spa much more.

VET OFFERS TIPS TO KEEP PETS SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

by Tomlyn on Nov 21 2016
From Traveling to Holiday Decor, Tomlyn® Veterinarian Offers Advice to Keep Our Four-Legged Family Members Healthy During the HolidaysFORT WORTH, Texas (November 21, 2016) –– The holiday season brings with it many joys, but also a set of issues unique to pet owners.  “Whether it’s a house full of guests around an anxious pet, holiday food left unattended on kitchen counters or seasonal décor left out for the chewing, there is an increase in emergency vet visits this time of year*,” says Dr. Jim Lowe, technical services veterinarian at Tomlyn® pet products (www.Tomyln.com).Dr. Lowe highlights four common holiday pet mishaps and how to avoid them: Holiday Hosting: Groups of unknown people, along with the loud noises of holiday gatherings, can make a cat or dog anxious causing them act out, such as jumping up on guests or acting fearful. “Designate a quiet area for your pet away from the festivities, including his favorite toy or blanket so he has a place to retreat to,” suggests Dr. Lowe. “In addition, consider a calming supplement like Tomlyn’s Relax & Calm Chews, or Natural Pet Pharmaceutical Anxiety & Stress for Dogs and Cats, an all-natural, taste-free liquid formula that is added to your pet’s water to help relieve stress-related symptoms such as restlessness, whining and fear of loud noises.” Begging for Trouble: Treating your dog to a few table scraps may seem harmless, but if everyone at your holiday table sneaks a snack to your pooch, he will likely end up with some digestive issues.  “High fat foods, such as buttery mashed potatoes or gravy, can cause vomiting and dehydration,” explains Dr. Lowe.  “Prepare his tummy with a probiotic like Tomlyn’s Pre & Probiotic Water Soluble Powder, two weeks before the holiday, to help support proper digestive and bowel health.” Stash the Trash: “My experience is that dogs are more likely to get their food scraps from the kitchen trash versus the table, so make sure the kitchen garbage and outdoor garbage receptacles are tightly sealed so your dog isn’t having a feast on dangerous turkey bones while you are enjoying the distraction of company,” adds Dr. Lowe. Traveling Terrors: Traveling makes everyone a bit anxious, especially dogs and cats. A scared pet may whine, cry, scratch or even attempt to walk throughout a moving car creating an even more dangerous situation for all passengers. “If possible, try to prepare your pet for the trip by taking short car rides to get him comfortable in the car or carrier case,” suggests Dr. Lowe. “On the big day, pull your pet’s food and water in the morning to help prevent motion sickness or bathroom emergencies. And, if anxiety is something you know can’t be avoided, consider a non-drug calming supplement like Tomlyn’s Relax & Calm Chews specifically formulated with L-Tryptophan, chamomile and ginger, to help reduce hyperactivity and support relaxation in both dogs and cats.” Dangerous Decor: Although traditional for the season, holiday plants such as poinsettias, holly and mistletoe can cause nausea and vomiting if accidentally ingested by pets. “Don’t forget about tinsel and other dangling decorations that can be a favorite to cats and dogs alike, as they can potentially create blockages in the digestive tract if swallowed,” warns Dr. Lowe. “If your pet tends to chew, keep décor high up and out of reach, and opt for artificial plants.” Tomlyn® was founded in 1976 by a veterinarian. In all the excitement, sweat, and logistics of relocating one’s residence, details regarding your pet’s health and well-being can be overlooked. A sound plan can ease their transition.A week prior to your departure, provide access to your pets’ crates and cages that will be used to transport your companions. Leave the doors open, place a favorite toy or blanket inside, and consider feeding them near or inside so they become very comfortable with them. Pheremones placed in and around crates can also assist in making your pet comfortable on the day they are placed in them and confined for an extended period during your move.Make sure pet vaccinations are up-to-date and place a copy of rabies certificates in the glove box. Check with your state of destination regarding requirements for health certificates for travel. To address travel anxiety and/or nausea, pets should travel on an empty stomach with feeding to occur at the end of the day’s travel. When making rest stops, keep dogs restrained with a leash or harness system. Frequent stops allow for elimination breaks and allow the dog to burn a little energy. Avoid areas where trash or other debris may be present. Offer small amounts of water at this time.Upon arrival at your new home, consider confining cats to a single, quiet room for a period of time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Food and litter boxes can be placed in these areas and allow cats to become more adventurous at their own pace.  Appreciate that cats may be especially nervous and hyper-excitable during this transition, so minimize loud noises and other stressors if possible.Assure the new backyard is free of any dangers to your dog and the fence is secure before allowing access. Before, during, and after the move, supplements to minimize anxiety and its symptoms can provide additional support during your family’s exciting transition.

EASY SOLUTIONS TO COMMON FRUSTRATING PET PROBLEMS

by Tomlyn on Aug 01 2016
From Hairballs to Hot Spots, Vet Offers AdviceFORT WORTH, Texas (July 26, 2016) –– It’s rare to find a  pet owner who hasn’t faced frustrating problems with their cat or dog, from common nuisances, such as pet anxiety, medication battles to itchy skin and hot spots. Dealing with these issues, however, doesn’t need to put a damper on the joy of pet ownership.Dr. Jim Lowe, technical services veterinarian at Tomlyn®, helps this 40-year-old pet product company provide easy solutions for pets and their owners. “Having a pet has so many benefits to people that shouldn’t be spoiled by these typically common issues many cats and dogs face,” he says. “At Tomlyn, we are dedicated to improving the life of both you and your pet through our effective and easy-to-use products.”Dr. Lowe outlines six frustrating pet problems and the products that can help:Hot SpotsHot Spots, which are also known as summer sores, occur when your dog itches, scratches or licks himself excessively until the skin breaks and becomes infected by the bacteria in the dog’s mouth. More common during times of high humidity, hot spots can appear on any age or breed of dog. The key to helping the skin return to a healthy state is keeping the infected area clean and free of additional licking or scratching. Tomlyn’s Hot Spot Spray Allercaine™ is an easy-to-use solution that helps prevent infection, reduce pain and itching, and soothe your dog’s irritated skin. It also contains Bittran II™ “Bitter Apple” to deter additional licking and biting of the infected area.Itchy and IrritatedWhether environment or allergy-related, dogs can get itchy skin for many reasons. Tomlyn’s Skin & Itch Irritations for Dog provides symptomatic relief of: Irritated, red, burning, itchy, dry, rough, scaly, chapped or cracked skin, rashes, fleabite dermatitis, hot spots, excessive gnawing or licking, skin eruptions, hair loss, or generally unhealthy skin.Pet Pill ProblemsLike people, many dogs and cats take medications on a regular basis, but getting the pills into them can be a daily struggle. Hiding the pills in food can be tricky since these animals have a keen sense of smell and are hard to fool. Tomlyn’s Pill-Masker for dogs and cats is easy-to-use and wraps pills of all shapes and sizes, and comes in a highly palatable bacon flavor.  This tasty paste won’t stick to floors or furniture.Behavior BattlesBehavior issues are a common problem with dogs under the age of three due to environmental factors, such as moving or separation anxiety. Additionally, many dogs and cats with serious behavior issues and lack of training are either abandoned or turned into shelters. Dr. Lowe says good training is key, but if your dog gets anxious at times when left alone or during thunderstorms, for example,  Tomlyn Relax & Calm chews (available in packages for medium and large dogs or cats and small dogs), can help calm your pet during these stressful situations. This concentrated formula promotes better compliance through its formula, including L-Tryptophan, chamomile and ginger.Hairball HurdlesAlthough a natural process for most cats, hairballs are caused when a pet ingests hair into its digestive tract, usually while grooming itself. While most hairballs are eliminated in the litter box, some sit in the stomach or small intestines and create a “ball” that cannot escape through traditional routes. Tomlyn’s Hairball Remedy – Laxatone® comes in a chew or a lubricant that are both gentle and effective in eliminating and preventing hairballs in cats and ferrets.Litterbox OdorsLitterbox odors are worsened by the bacteria that live in the animal’s waste. In addition to regular litterbox cleanings, an easy way to lessen waste odors is to help promote the growth of the good gut bacteria. Tomlyn’s Pre & Probiotic supplement for dogs and cats, a water-soluble powder that contains the highest CFU levels amongst veterinary probiotics, supports balanced microbial flora and intestinal health.Tomlyn was founded in 1976 by a veterinarian. Not-so Obvious Signs Your Pet May Be Suffering From Osteoarthritis

by Tomlyn on Jun 30 2016
Ultimately, osteoarthritis, or degeneration of the cartilage in the joint, is a radiographic diagnosis. Clinical signs in your pet may be very subtle or not cause you to immediately think about bony issues as the root issue. Consider decreases or abrupt changes in your pet’s appetite. Once very happy on dry food, you find yourself having to feed canned food to stimulate food intake. Versus considering your pet spoiled (or you very well-trained) consider pain in the joints of the jaw making it uncomfortable to continue breaking down dry food. If you find your pet is reluctant to approach the food bowl, instead laying down and looking at it sadly, consider that it may be painful to navigate across the kitchen floor and so he chooses not to eat. Try bringing the food closer. Animals with neck pain may be more apt to eat from an elevated food dish versus flexing down to eat off ground level. Age is not a clinical condition, and healthy dogs do not get older and suddenly become inactive. Changes in activity level can be indications of joint discomfort. The “old dog laying on the porch all the time because he is old” adage may not hold water when consideration is given to potentially painful joints. From clinical experience, proper management of such “old” dogs can magically make them feel like puppies again and the porch a lot less popular place to be. With chronic pain, pets, as people, can become depressed and show changes in attitude. Reluctance to want to play ball, go on walks, navigate stairs, or spend time with the family can indicate underlying discomfort. Perhaps the most obvious clinical sign of osteoarthritis is pain. While vocalizing, whining, or crying are obvious signs of discomfort, some animals may exhibit pain is much more subtle ways. Hiding, cowering, or whimpering when being approached may be signs of discomfort. Pain may also be exhibited through changes in social activity or sudden episodes of aggression. Consider these not-so-obvious clinical signs when assessing the current health status of your pet and consult with your veterinarian regarding your suspicions. Multiple modalities, from joint products to support the structure of the cartilage, pain medications to address discomfort, physical therapy to promote movement and muscular tone, and alternative therapies are available to support the well-being of your companion.

EXPERT VETERINARIAN OFFERS TIPS TO CALM A PET'S JITTERS

by Tomlyn on May 12 2016
20% of Pet Owners¹ in the New Tomlyn® Pet Health Survey* Report that Their Dogs and Cats Experience Anxiety When They Left The House; Vet Expert Discusses Common Triggers, Stress Signs and Solutions for Pet OwnersFORT WORTH, Texas, April 29, 2016 – Excessive panting in the car or cowering when new guests arrive are just some of the signs of pet anxiety. "Pet owners often think anxiety only manifests itself as trembling or ‘tail between the legs,’ but a pet may be sending stress signals in other ways, and there’s things that be done about it,” says Dr. Jim Lowe, technical services veterinarian for Tomlyn pet health products (https://tomlyn.com).Excessive shedding, pinned ears, continual yawning, nose licking and avoidance are some other signs. “Dogs and cats rescued from shelters can be fearful from previous trauma or neglect,” Lowe explains. “But even animals adopted through breeders or friends can develop high-stress personalities depending on the situation.”What can set off pet stress? Dr. Lowe summarizes some common situations: Separation: If your pet appears depressed or anxious before you leave, begins to pace, urinates/defecates when left alone even for short periods, reportedly barks or meows excessively while you are gone, or causes any type of destruction while you are away from home, separation anxiety could be the root cause. “This can occur during the workday or even when part of your family leaves, such as when kids go back to school at the end of summer – our pets get used to us being around and some stress out when we aren’t,” explains Dr. Lowe. Traveling: Pets can display travel anxiety even before the trip begins. You may notice him panting, pacing, shaking, acting hyper aroused, barking/meowing excessively, salivating, vomiting and possibly urinating while you are making preparations to leave – sometimes even packing a bag can be a trigger. “We think dogs love to stick their heads out the car window and take in the rush of wind, but there are many dogs that are very anxious to be on the go,” says Dr. Lowe. “They may even yawn repetitively as a sign of anxiety.” Noise: Fireworks and other loud noises such as construction work, music and thunder can cause extreme anxiety in our domestic pets. During these situations you may notice your pet trembling, whimpering, panting, constantly seeking your attention or protection, or attempting to run away/escape from the noise by hiding under furniture, in dark rooms, etc. “This is probably the most common stress-factor in our pets, and it’s often one we can’t control,” adds Dr. Lowe. “Loud thunder or jack hammers outside your apartment building may come no matter what we do.” Meeting New People: While you know that the stranger is trying to be friendly – adult or child – your pet may not see it that way. According to the Tomlyn Pet Health survey, one in four pets is nervous or antsy around new people. “When a stranger walks up to him, the stress may be obvious if your pet attempts to back away, growls/hisses, barks/meows excessively or tries to snap, bite or scratch, but there are other less obvious signs like pinned ears or lowering their stance that means they are anxious,” explains Dr. Lowe. Dr. Lowe advises that the best way to reduce anxiety in our pets, particularly in the things we can control – like separation or meeting strangers – is to gradually expose your pet to these changes, conditioning them to cope with each in time. Avoidance of the situation just perpetuates the issue. For loud noises that are unavoidable – like thunder or fireworks on 4th of July - try to bring your pet to a quieter place, such as an interior room, or to play soft music as a distraction. In addition to behavioral conditioning, consider using a calming supplement like Tomlyn® Relax & Calm Chews for cats or dogs. Specifically formulated with L-Tryptophan, chamomile and ginger, Tomlyn Relax & Calm Chews support balanced behavior, relaxation and reduced hyperactivity in large to small dogs and cats.“Adding a supplement such as Tomlyn® Relax & Calm Chews can be incredibly helpful when transitioning your pets to feel less anxious in these situations,” summarizes Dr. Lowe. “Its natural ingredients help your pet to feel relaxed as you continue to gradually expose your pet to the environments that can cause anxiety and distress.”For more information, visit www.Tomlyn.com.About Tomlyn®:Tomlyn®, a pet health and wellness company founded in 1976, carries a complete line of scientifically developed, veterinarian-approved pet health products. CRIPPLING CANINE FLU ON THE RISE AGAIN ACROSS THE MIDWEST

by Tomlyn on Apr 18 2016
Tomlyn® Trifectant Disinfectant is at the Ready for this Resurgence of Highly Contagious H3N2 Strand; Now Cats Also at RiskFORT WORTH, Texas, April 14, 2016 – Tomlyn, makers of the popular line of pet health and wellness products, is actively monitoring the supply and availability of its Trifectant® broad-spectrum disinfectant, which is capable of killing 99.9% of major viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens, including those that cause canine flu. It’s used in facilities where there is a large population of animals where diseases can more easily spread, such as animal shelters, boarding kennels, etc., though it can be used at home, as well. The resurgence of the H3N2 strand of the canine flu in the Midwest, which is thought to be the same as last year’s deadly outbreak, is likely to be brought upon by the spring weather. The canine virus has already been reported in multiple states this year, but is now spreading among cats.An animal shelter in Chicago1 recently reported more than 150 sickened dogs at their location. Last year, the Chicago area was faced with 1,700 infected dogs. Surprisingly, a group of cats in a shelter in northwestern Indiana2 have recently been infected with the influenza virus, which previously was thought to only affect dogs.“The canine flu sickened hundreds of dogs in 28 states last year, and has the potential to spread even further, “ says Dr. Jim Lowe, technical services veterinarian for Tomlyn. “With pets becoming more active and social in the springtime, it is important to protect them from this highly contagious disease.”The virus has an incubation period of one to three days, but infected pets can be contagious for up to two weeks. Symptoms include coughing, nasal discharge, fever and loss of appetite. It is currently not a threat to humans. Although vaccines are available for the H3N8 strand, this H3N2 strand of canine flu is fairly new. In November 20153, the U.S. Department of Agriculture granted a conditional license to market the first commercially available H3N2 canine influenza vaccine. The virus most commonly spreads among animals through close contact at daycare centers, boarding facilities, dog parks and similar areas where there are larger group of dogs or cats. According to Dr. Lowe, facilities should aim to prevent the virus spreading by properly disinfecting with a product like Tomlyn’s Trifectant. It mixes with water for a ready-to-use solution that is safe for humans and animals, biodegradable and effective at killing pathogens that cause canine flu, parvovirus and other diseases that can affect dogs, cats, horses or other animals. It is available over-the-counter from a variety of local retailers.
